Lack of decoration nowadays can be a style in itself; it certainly lends a certain je ne sais quoi. And, at least in the case of Gokul Bar & Restaurant, it seems to be working, with its clientele (an unexpected mix of students and business types) usually charmed by its rough and tumble lack of an aesthetic. This is helped, in large part, by offering ridiculously wallet-friendly prices for its drinks and a menu full of tasty eats.

Skating along the knife edge between dingy dive and trendy dive bar, Gokul Bar & Restaurant is the restaurant equivalent of Flash Gordon – a cult classic – which only serves to enhance its quasi-legendary status in South Mumbai. The food menu is extensive, throwing together salty, moreish bar snacks with hearty, lip-smacking Indian and Chinese dishes. And to wash it all down, a full roster of international beers and spirits, including aged whiskeys.
