Only once you’ve been security-checked within an inch of your life can you approach the curiously-named Intercontinental – The Lalit. Looking like it might belong on a beach on Torremolinos, this is actually one of the better places to stay in Mumbai if you have an early flight (the airport is only 1-kilometre away). The lobby is quite imposing with its eight-storey atrium, the guestrooms are pretty with wood panelling, silk cushions and traditional paintings on the wall, and the service is good enough – quick and friendly without being imposing.
The ‘Rejuve’ Spa at The Lalit, too, is far better than it’s grating name suggests with a host of awards under its belt: try a session of ‘Pizhichil’, where a gentle flow of ‘Dosha’ oil is poured all over the body. Pretty indulgent, yes, but necessary for any hedonist after a long flight or a fun night on the tiles.
