Bar Tonique

Despite Bar Tonique’s appearance as swanky but one of the smallest bars in New Orleans, it boasts a surprisingly vast cellarful of globally sourced brews and wines. Tonique’s shelves are stacked high with a cohort of international flavours, from Japan to Jamaica, an assembly intended to be just as eclectic as Bar Tonique’s customers.

By far its most impressive achievement, though, are its cocktails. They describe their mixes as “hand-crafted”, and this is no word of a lie, as somewhere behind the scenes the owners manufacture their very own ginger beer, tonic water and juices. On a busy evening you may find yourself waiting a little for your order; the bar staff take their art seriously and the drinks are always created with care, but the atmosphere is friendly, modern and exciting. Advertising “pre- and post-prohibition” recipes, Bar Tonique draws from the history of the New Orleans’ French Quarter as much as it revels in its own contemporary decor and stylish patrons – a meeting of old and new in one of the up-and-coming cocktail bars in New Orleans.
