Angelo Brocato

Generations of New Orleanians have skipped dessert at dinner so that they can instead stop by Angelo Brocato’s Gelateria for some tasty gelato. The 100-year-old gelateria and bakery, which began in the Italian section of the French Quarter, has an atmosphere more typical of the 19th century than the 21st. A sepia-toned portrait of the founder watches over the room, which is cooled with ornate ceiling fans and lined with jars of brightly coloured sweets. In the summer months, the Brocato family adds soothing ices made with fresh seasonal fruit to the menu. Brocato’s used to be a locals-only destination, but now the Canal Street streetcar line rumbles right past its door. On the way to City Park or the New Orleans Museum of Art, hop off for an afternoon treat or a quick energy boost from an expertly made espresso.
