Hg2 : The Hedonist

Mesón 923

Some restaurants are so attractive, you worry that the food might be an after thought. Mesón 923 has the looks of a supermodel. The brainchild of the incredibly glamorous Astrid LaVenia and designed in conjunction with Brooks Graham, Mesón 923 is a dark space inside a converted 19th century warehouse that is effortlessly elegant and the exposed brick, dark wood and leather provide a pretty-gritty feel.

The kitchen, however, proves that this place is more than a pretty face. The grown-up cooking is a mix of Catalan influences melded with classic local, New Orleans dishes, the meat and seafood are precise with piercingly clear flavours, thanks largely to the impeccably-sourced ingredients.

The crowd is characterised by slightly more mature diners upstairs who take advantage of the full a la carte menu, while a younger crowd, drawn from nearby condos, pack the ground floor for cocktails and snacks from the crudo menu. Everyone fights for one of the 20 seats that sit on the open-air balcony that wraps around the outside of the building.
