Dr. Bob’s Art
Anyone who spends more than a day in New Orleans knows the art of Dr. Bob. Bars and restaurants, from the Riverbend to the Bywater, display his ubiquitous “Be Nice or Leave” signs, bottle-cap studded frames, and folk paintings with thick, bright strokes. A trip to Dr. Bob’s gallery reveals that he’s working on some new slogans, like “Be Gay and Stay” and “Rebuild or Leave.” Outside the good doctor’s gallery, the gravel is flecked with a rainbow of spilled paint. To see the artwork, you might have to step over tools, wires, and a half-finished alligator sculpture. The gallery’s hours depend on the whim of Dr. Bob, although he’s open most days. As he has said, “An artist has got to eat.”
