The Blond

There’s a reason so many of New York’s style set have had parties at The Blond, found inside Lower Manhattan’s 11 Howard. Actually, there are lots of reasons, from the plush velvet banquettes and the low lighting, to the art-lined walls, with pieces from Dan Attoe and Nobuyoshi Araki in pride of place. In fact, Attoe’s neon work that reads “We are just complicated animals” is likely to be the first thing you see as you wind up the spiral staircase to The Blond.

Once you’re inside, The Blond is all curves and soft edges. Cascades of fabric, arched windows, the odd bronze animal mask peering from out of shadows cast by towering flowers. And the blond wood, for which you’d imagine the bar gets its name, glows as the night moves on – and not just because of the drinks. The lighting, like the rest of hotelier Aby Rosen’s chic space (which was, in turn, designed by Anda Andrei Design and Space Copenhagen), sets one hell of a mood. Helped, understandably, by the well-mixed drinks and the petite menu of snacks; fuel is necessary as the hours tick past and the DJs spin tunes to get the dancing going in earnest.
