Getting an outdoor sidewalk table at this park-view corner eatery is one of the best shows in town. “[At the] Coffee Shop since you can sit outside and watch the bustle,” says Frank Cisneros of the organic wine bar and veggie bistro Counter. Chef Jose Meirelles agrees – for people-watching, this Union Square haunt can’t be beat. And while the service is inconsistent at best (and sometimes rude at worst), the South American-tinged menu has simple pleasures like seared steak with chimichurri sauce and rotisserie chicken with red beans, rice, and never-enough sweet plantains that might even draw your attention away from the Union Square throngs for a minute or two. Chef Brad Farmerie, though, prefers to cut out the middle man: “Coffee shop at the bar – simple, comfort food and plenty of model-wanna-be waitstaff, [although] when you’re hung over it doesn’t seem to matter that much…” Amen.
