Di Fara

When the name Di Fara is invoked, you’d think people were speaking about Mecca by the way their faces change and their tones become so very, very serious. There is still great pride in pizza in NYC, and Di Fara is, unequivocally, one of the best representations in the whole of the Big Apple.

Don’t even try to argue the point with Grub Street’s Josh Ozersky: “Any schlep is worth it to go pay homage to Dom DeMarco of Di Fara, ‘the Saint of Avenue J,’ the city’s greatest pizza maker.” Food writer Raquel Pelzel heartily agrees, “Di Fara’s in Midwood, best pizza on the planet.”

It is a journey – at least a half hour ride on the rumbling Q train out to Avenue J – but that thin, thin crunchy Neapolitan-style pizza made by Dominic De Marco, and only him (he won’t even let his kids do it!), with its delicate tomato sauce, Parmesan, and fresh pieces of basil will render you speechless, except for the words, “One more, please.”
