If you’re looking to eat well and eat fast, Chinatown is a great stop. But where to go? Take a little advice from Monkey Bar’s Chris Cheung, who loves to catch his breath at this divey little Mott Street spot for its fast, good Cantonese-style food. “I dine solo after work and when I’m running errands regularly in Chinatown. [One of] my favorite spots [is] Hop Kee on Mott Street.” Located next door to that infamous of late-night greasy spoons, Wo Hop, Hop Kee may not look much spiffier than its neighbour, and is certainly on par price-wise (read: cheap) but the food is easily a few levels above. Plunk down in a vinyl booth and go for the quartered in-the-shell Cantonese crab, peppery, juicy Peking pork chop, tender snails cooked in black bean sauce, the guilty pleasure of chow fun, with its generous chunks of chicken or beef.
