Which came first? the inspirational Italian wine list or the pizza menu? No one will really know for sure, but at Otto Enoteca, Mario Batali’s foray into that round, crunchy, most beloved of food-stuffs in fair Gotham, the crispy, iron-griddle cooked pizzas (17 in total, plus usually a few more offered as daily specials) are so good, you’d best bring along more than a few friends in order to order and sample as many as possible.
Peasant’s Frank De Carlo likes to grab a seat at the long, comfortable bar, “to hang out with the great bar crew” and Ralf Kuettel takes his pies with a side of people watching. While toppings at Otto Enoteca come in everything from fennel to clams, we are partial to the perfectly simple bianca, adorned with only olive oil and sea salt.
Tip: do not pass up Meredith Kurtzman’s house-made gelato, in flavours like salty caramel, olive oil, and peppermint chocolate chip.
