Hg2 : The Hedonist

Gramercy Park Hotel

Following an extensive overhaul, hotelier Ian Schrager unveiled his chic bohemian recasting of one of New York’s top luxury hotels in early 2007 to much acclaim – lauded as much for its bold, unlikely combination of stylistic elements as it has been for its relentlessly chic nightlife scene. Rich in artsy history – it sits in the space that was formerly architect Stanford White’s home, before which it was the birthplace of Edith Wharton – the new Gramercy Hotel presents a dreamlike mixture of antique and contemporary pieces; its tiled-floor lobby, red velvet curtains, impressive fireplaces, and precious art sets a Wonderland-ish stage beneath its custom-made Venetian glass chandelier. Artist Julian Schnabel lent his brilliance to its design, as well as to the Rose Bar and Jade Bar, which lure luminaries from the city’s intelligentsia and jet set. Meanwhile, the chic roof bar – tended by a gorgeous staff – is available exclusively to hotel guests and special members. The hotel’s 185 guest rooms and suites feature contrasting elements of grandeur and art-driven décor – spacious, colorful, and deluxe. The hotel’s restaurant serves haute Chinese, and a state-of-the-art gym called Aerospace offers cutting-edge equipment.
