To the delight of refined hipsters citywide, this most discreet of New York restaurants, with all of its haute-hunting lodge charm, skims neither on atmosphere nor menu preparations, celebrating the simplicity of classic American and English gastronomy while drawing out the highest potential in its ingredients. Beneath the watchful eyes of hunting trophies (taxidermy is so in these days), the sexy crowd chatters at wooden tables while munching through eye-pleasing plates of triple-cheese macaroni, “Devils on Horseback” (blue-cheese stuffed prunes wrapped in bacon), the mixed grill (featuring rosemary lamb sausage, pork loin, and boar sausage), and seared filet mignon dabbed with horseradish cream and roasted onions. Particularly good is Freeman’s at brunch time, where hungover locals feast on authentic beef brisket hash, and soul-satisfying skillet eggs arrive bubbling with bacon, spinach, and Gruyère cheese, accompanied by a skillfully prepared Bloody Mary.
