Hg2 : The Hedonist

For over 40 years – long before P.S.1 became Long Island City’s cultural Mecca and the nearby sculpture park lured hipster-ish visitors and new residents out on the G train to this urban strip of sleepy Queens, Ida and Vincenzo Cerbone were steadily stewing, braising, and tossing a multitude of rustic, countryside-inspired southern Italian dishes, much of it made with vegetables and herbs they’ve grown in their own garden.

Chef Michael Lomonaco doesn’t hesitate to cross the border into Queens for the Cerbone’s outstanding home-style cooking: “In the winter, fall or spring – but not during mama’s annual sojourn to Italy! – [it’s] Manducatis; great, old world Italian in Long Island City. Geographically not that far, but it is a world away.” Wine expert Tony DiDio concurs: “Great family restaurant with a good mix of peasant dishes, friendly service and a wonderful and affordable wine list.”
