Masa

You would think Masa, up, up, up in the Time Warner “mall,” was Mecca by the way our chefs heartily nominated it for a bevy of accolades. And while its next door Bar Masa is a more affordable option (and a great place to eat on your own, says chef Michael Lomonaco: “I’ll take the bar at Bar Masa – unbelievable sushi and sashimi with fabulous cocktails, or for the extraordinary sake collection”) everyone seems to agree that a precious seat at the Japanese cypress Honiki wood bar to watch chef Masa Takayama at work is more than just a treat – it’s an honor.

“In New York City, Masa is really quite an incredible restaurant,” says chef Paul Liebrandt. There is no menu, as Chef Masa only prepares what is perfect for that day, and the price is indeed dear – upwards of $400 in the restaurant for the meal. But if anyone ever says the words, “Let’s go anywhere you want – my treat!” Masa is a must.
