Credited with kickstarting the nightlife scene that’s now synonymous with Oberkampf, Café Charbon is still the first place we’d recommend for a drink on that strip.

If the magnificently restored interior is all high ceilings, Belle Epoque murals, mirrors and vintage light fittings, the typical regular is more of a Joey Ramone character, even more so by night, when the bar acts as warm-up zone for the sister club and music venue Nouveau Casino. During the day, you could bring your parents – it’s not intimidatingly trendy, and the sense of history gives it across-the-board appeal. If your parents are ageing punks, so much the better.

Staff are friendly and professional, and the clientele are blessedly unpretentious. Wines of the month, cocktail specials and brunch dishes are suggested on blackboards propped here and there.
