Chai 33 is all about wine; even the cocktails are wine-based. After a little guided tour of the downstairs cellar, where wine is sorted by colour, taste and global region, your choice is brought up to you in a carafe. However, if you’re too lazy to venture down there, colour-coded menus are supplied.
rnThere are three wine-tasting sessions a night, at 7pm, 7.30pm and 8pm. In the roomy bar upstairs the vibe is very laid back, while the restaurant on the ground floor is brightly lit and filled with lively, wine-fuelled gossip. Twice a month they stage a crazy take on karaoke, when you can have a go at singing chansons français with a three-piece band.
rnDon’t expect to be handed the mic as you come waltzing in – you need to send in a demo tape beforehand. Screening the good amateur singers from the bad results in quality music, so look out for the dates when the season’s finalists fight it out for the title. Make sure you check out the conceptual loos (especially the men’s) before you leave.
