La Mezzanine de l’Alcazar
A sophisticated sibling to the Wagg club, just along the street, the Mezzanine de l’Alcazar is a hip cocktail bar, with a 1990s sort of vibe — but in a good way. All ages stand, sit, dance and flirt, dressy more or less, but not intimidatingly fashiony; a few suits fit in fine, as do jeans, though the girls are mainly kinda glam. Cocktails flow, and the music moves from afrofunk to Balearic to deep house and disco, intensifying as the evening develops; DJs play Wednesday to Saturday and, like Costes and Buddha Bar, La Mezzanine de L’Alcazar has released many volumes of branded CDs. On the walls is a selection of very cool art photography, curated by Michel Besmond, who set up L’Alcazar with Terence Conran 12 years ago (downstairs is a restaurant much like Quaglino’s in London). The prints by Japanese eroticist Nobuyoshi Araki and underground Brooklynite Janine Gordon are all for sale.
