La Patache
Now that the famed Chez Prune has become a bit safe, we recommend this Second Empire drinking hole, which has, allegedly, been repainted since the 19th century but still looks as good as old. The yellow walls are adorned with sprigged wallpaper and right-on posters, and a wood-burning stove chuffs away in winter. The jukebox is no more than decorative, alas. If you want something simple and delicious to eat, you’re in luck: La Patache’s speciality is tinned food. No kidding: the rillettes are from the Vendée; the sardines from Morbihan; and it all comes with organic sourdough bread and demi-sel butter. What starts modestly here can end up all over the place, thanks to live music of all genres, improv theatre and the open, friendly vibe.
