Le Kitch
This little bar-cum-restaurant is situated on the calmer side of the rue Oberkampf, by the boulevard Voltaire. Although it’s called Le Kitch, the décor isn’t OTT, it’s rather cool, with a touch of kitsch here and there. Broken bottles and colourful glass marbles enhance the crumbling plaster walls, as do a few miscellaneous and appropriately tacky pictures.
The mish-mash of Formica tables, comfortably worn armchairs and chilled soundtrack make it so inviting that you’ll find no reason to leave before closing. The friendly staff will happily make suggestions if you’re at a loss as to which cocktail to order, and will put great care into preparing them, although it is equally a good place for beer.
The inventive French menu is delicious and inexpensive, though you can always just settle for a plate of cheese or charcuterie. A room next to the bar, complete with sofa and board games, is reminiscent of an OAP’s nest – great, if privacy is what you’re after.
