Bread & Roses
Who’d have thought that among the biggest raves on the current Paris food scene is a deli both humble and English-influenced? Bread & Roses is a huge hit among locals for its fresh, organic bread (the fruit and rye varieties are particularly lauded), healthy yet delicious salads, huge puff-pastry tarts and sublime cheesecake. The light-filled corner site has a stone floor and cherry-wood furniture, and there’s room for 18 people, plus seats at a handful of tables on the street. Prices are high, but the well-heeled residents of the 6ème don’t seem to mind; they’re enthused by lighter, simpler lunching, and this is the place to get birthday cakes. Come for breakfast or Saturday brunch, and look out for celeb devotees, such as Catherine Deneuve and Emmanuelle Béart.
