Cafés et Thés Verlet
A quiet, unhurried experience, Verlet is a connoisseur’s coffee house, set back one street from the teeming rue du Rivoli. Stocking dozens of single-plantation coffees and premium teas, it’s a veritable temple to caffeine. There’s room for 20 in the rustic-style salon downstairs, which is bedecked with all manner of tea and coffee ephemera; upstairs feels more contemporary, with a huge window looking out over rue Saint-Honoré. If you’d care to be guided among the brews on offer, owner (and roaster extraordinaire) M Duchossoy, who bought the business from Pierre Verlet, grandson of the founder, is happy to guide customers through his handpicked selection. He knows many of his producers by name, including the Cameroonian Catholic monks who make his washed Arabica Peaberry. If you like what you try, you can buy a bag to take home with you; there’s a mail order service, too.
