Hg2 : The Hedonist

Still owned by the Bavarez family, who built it in 1925 in response to demand for a more intimate sort of hotel, the Raphael is something like an English stately home as imagined during Hollywood’s golden age, with walnut-panelled gallery lobby, stained-glass windows and antique tapestries. There’s lots of space in the sumptuously decorated rooms, whose high, wooden-arched ceilings, opulent Louis XVI furnishings and whopping built-in wardrobes have been kept spruce with successive restorations. Even if you don’t check in, do check out the Bar Anglais for a well-heeled cocktail, and/or panoramic lunch at Les Jardins Plein Ciel, the hotel’s swish top-floor terrace. Service is particularly excellent; the concierge is primed with local recommendations for eating and drinking that you might not otherwise come across.
