Hg2 : The Hedonist

Musée National Picasso

Set in the fashionable Marais district in the heart of Paris, the Picasso museum is housed in a magnificent 17th-century hotel and contains the world’s most complete Picasso archive. Arranged chronologically, the collection encompasses Picasso’s entire artistic evolution, including his early days in Barcelona, Cubism, sculpture, his sources of inspiration and his own art collection.

The core of the holdings was formed when Picasso’s heirs made a huge donation to the French state, gifting hundreds of paintings, drawings and sculptures in lieu of duty after Picasso’s death in 1973. In 1978, the French state augmented the museum’s holdings when it received a gift of Picasso’s personal art collection, including works by Matisse, Cézanne and other major artists.

Further donations of personal archives, and a gift in lieu of death duties from Picasso’s wife, Jacqueline, rounded off the collection. A cafeteria in the small garden serves light refreshments during the summer months (15 April-15 October).
