From its bright and airy space in Vršovice, Café Jen serves coffee, breakfast, and cakes to locals from their “hood”, as they affectionately refer to it. Not to mention those who are happy to schlep from further afield to try their single origin coffee of the moment and see what kind of cake they’re baking.
You see, there’s no fixed menu here. They bake cakes they want to bake, depending on recipes they’ve got their hands on. They’re handmade, made from scratch, made with love. And you can tell. There might be a carrot cake packed with walnuts, some sticky banana bread, or maybe a few rich chocolate cookies. It just depends. And the same goes for breakfast, with dishes ranging from shakshuka to smoothies and avocado toast. There’s always something a little different on offer, and it’s always served with a smile.
Café Jen is a sunny place – and not just because the all-white interiors play with natural light so well. For its owners, Dominika and Hanka, Café Jen was and is a labour of love, born out of a good idea and a real sense of place in their Kodaňská street location. And the people who work at Café Jen seem to love being there just as much as the owners. It’s a compellingly lovely place to go. The interiors are, as mentioned, largely white with light wooden panelling. There’s no clutter, but the odd journal, a vase of freshly cut flowers, and a clip jar full of tawny sugar might be dotted about the wooden countertops. Set against the white, there are bright cherry red bar stools and metal chairs, and the edges of the furniture, from the shelves that contain bags of their well-sourced coffee beans to the glass cabinets full of cake, have a crisp painted black trim. A visit here is a surefire way to get any day off to a good start.
