Tea Mountain

With vaulted ceilings and rough black plaster walls that are flecked with little pieces of coal and hay, Tea Mountain in Prague’s Karlín district is visually arresting to say the least. Designed by A1 Architects, the space feels earthy, with the play between dark and light doing exactly what it’s supposed to – draw your attention to the tea you ordered. There’s an emphasis on the beauty of ritual here, without being too reverential or new-agey about it. It’s delicious, well-sourced tea, which, much like any great food or drink, is treated with the respect it deserves.

At Tea Mountain, the teas are sourced from around the world; Darjeeling, Nepal, Japan and Taiwan in particular. There might be leaves that grew from hundred-year-old wild trees at the top of Wen Shan Mountain. Prize-winning smooth-tasting, honey- and fruit-rich black tea from famous “Heart of Pine” garden of Taiwan. Sencha. Puerh. Red tea. Safe to say, there’s plenty of choice here – but it’s not just any old tea. It’s a curated selection that’s sourced and imported direct from the farmers, gardens and merchants.

At Tea Mountain, you experience their philosophy of great tea with every sip – and you enjoy the serene ambience alongside. But such is the appeal of their product, that you can now also enjoy a cup of Tea Mountain tea at other joints around Prague. But while it’s always fun to find it listed on a menu, it’s worth heading to Karlín to enjoy it in situ and brewed by those who truly love tea – and who are almost guaranteed to entice you to love it too.
