U Modré Kachničky II
Good restaurants in Prague’s touristy centre are hard to come by, but U Modré Kachničky II is conveniently located in the Old Town, not far from Old Town Square. This restaurant is the second version of this Prague dining institution, famous for its hearty, quintessentially Czech cuisine, it specializes in game and duck dishes (the name translates as ‘The Blue Duck’), but offers other options including steaks, fish and also vegetarian dishes.
Occupying two floors, both quaintly embellished by 1930s and ’40s swing and jazz, U Modré Kachničky II is an undeniably romantic place. The downstairs is darker and more intimate, while upstairs can be used to cater for larger parties and groups. The wine list features a decent range of Czech and French varieties and the waiters are knowledgeable enough to help you choose the best wine for your meal.
The food is good – very good – but don’t be surprised to find you feel somewhat heavier on leaving than when you first went in
