Hotel San Francesco
Tucked away in Trastevere is the Hotel San Francesco, a charming boutique-style hotel at the more affordable end of the market. The hotel’s name comes from the fact that Mussolini gave the building to the nearby Saint Francis monastery to train priests as missionaries. The 24 rooms are small, all ensuite and are functional as opposed to memorable. Upstairs a picturesque roof terrace is the highlight of the hotel, where a bar and the panoramic view of the Eternal City, make the Hotel San Francesco a good bet for a weekend away. There are few decent hotels in Trastevere, one of the more up-and-coming areas of Rome that isn’t just packed with tourists tick-boxing the city’s monuments. Instead the area is filled with hip little bars, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and some independent art galleries and little boutiques.
