Rye
Rye bar and lounge is the most authentic of the TenderNob bunch, with subtle industrial design accents, a sidewalk smoking patio, and the Smiths on the owner’s iPod playlist. Take a seat at the bar and make note of the mini buffets of fresh garnishes, including seasonal fruit and aromatic herbs. The Flash – made with local gin, “pummelled” kiwi, cucumber and fresh lemon – borders on legendary. The scene is downtown meets down-and-dirty; the crowd, largely affluent 20s and 30s, comes to chill, smoke, socialise, and shoot free pool. San Franciscans always feel torn between a good dive bar and a swanky hot spot. With creative drinks, attentive service, and a gritty smoking cage, Rye is the happy medium. The well-heeled crowd blends with TL city kids inside this very-dark upscale hole-in-the-wall with concrete floors, a pool table, and leather bench seating. With a chill out playlist and plenty seats at the bar, Rye is great at happy hour. After 10pm on weekends, come prepared to stand. You can order a G&T anywhere, so take a hint from the bartenders muddling fruit-fresh concoctions are a Rye signature. The basil gimlet is outstanding.
