Tonga Room

In few San Francisco bars will you need one, but in here you may need the umbrella, because the fantastically kitschy draw of the Polynesian restaurant and bar Tonga Room is its indoor monsoon. Thunder precedes the melodious downpour, the perfect backdrop to your enjoyment of this faux Polynesian paradise complete with faux thatch roof, faux bamboo, and plenty of real fruit juice-based cocktails served in very large, island-themed containers. No kidding, the drinks come in ceramic mugs shaped like a tiki totem and are topped with pineapple and a paper umbrella. Groups of FiDi revellers trudge up the big hill to hoist blender drinks at the happy hour discount while they eat their fill from the $7 Pacific Rim buffet and stand in awe of the indoor hurricane-complete with rain and thunder! Happy hour is 5 to 7pm weekdays. If you can’t make that, hit the T-Room early or late on Saturday night to mix with troupes of young revellers.
