The neighbourhood may be a bit ragged, but hip-hop and world music club Club Six rises above other nightclubs in San Francisco, at the top of its gritty, slightly punk-flavoured game. Grab a drink upstairs in the loft-style lounge, relax on any of the many sofas, contemplate the art of the moment, and listen to a live band of just about any persuasion imaginable. When you’re ready, plunge into the basement, where the ceiling is low, the air is hot, the music is loud, and everyone is dancing. Tuesdays host a mixed bag, including live jazz and spoken word; Thursdays is the regular reggae dance party called Give Thankz; weekends bring all kinds of talent, from famous DJs to electronica to experimental videos. The crowd is young and hip.
