Found a block from Union Square, Hotel G puts travellers in easy distance of some of San Francisco’s top spots. We’re talking Fisherman’s Wharf or the Mission District in just 15 minutes. But there’s plenty in the surrounding neighbourhood to keep visitors entertained as well, from cultural sites like the Asian Art Museum to bars like Hogwash, which is a mecca for craft beer lovers. For oysters and cocktails, however, don’t miss the on-side Benjamin Cooper bar. Elegant, with just the right amount of vintage flair, the bar serves up expertly mixed drinks and lip-smacking bivalves week-round.

Hotel G’s also got a restaurant, if you’re in the mood for Euro-American fare. Just stop by Brasserie 398 whenever you get peckish – it’s open from breakfast through to dinner – for dishes like “Green Eggs and Ham” (poached eggs with green chili grits, ham steak and tomatillo salsa), steak frites, whole-roasted thyme and rosemary poussin, and pan-seared foie gras with a quince jus. Mouthwatering food and drink aside, Hotel G also offers its guests the use of a gym, meeting spaces and a chic little shop.

But, of course, it’s the rooms that get punters through Hotel G’s stylish front doors. (And they are good looking, the building’s 1908 facade has been renovated, but otherwise left alone in all its chic, original glory). The interiors are also a happy meeting of contemporary and antique, with Bigelow toiletries in the bathrooms, and rescued retro banker’s lamps in the rooms. Wooden furniture and mid-century-inspired pieces warm the all-white spaces, while lush greenery adds some colour. It’s a slick, yet unassuming hotel with a playful vibe.
