Bar Crudo
It’s a good start: incredible seafood that’s been sustainably and locally sourced, a good wine list, and an even better beer list. Bar Crudo, found in the Divisadero corridor, is all that and more. And just in case you were wondering, “crudo” means “raw” in Italian and Spanish.
That’s why you won’t be surprised to find plenty of fin-spankingly fresh raw seafood here. The freshly-shucked oysters are particularly popular (Bar Crudo even has a daily $1 oyster happy hour), with around six different varieties on offer. The eponymous crudo, meanwhile, could be anything from Arctic Char with horseradish and dill to scallops with pickled corn and tiny chive blossoms and comes four pieces to a plate. Can’t choose? Then the sampler platter is probably the way to go.
Although the raw dishes are crowd-pleasers, one of the best dishes is a hot one – the seafood chowder. It’s a creamy bowlful of mussels, squid, shrimp, and potatoes, with a moreishly salty hint of bacon. Delicious. Other hot hits on the menu include the grilled octopus, served with cannellini beans, chorizo, roasted tomatoes and chimichurri, and the roasted crab that comes with charred Meyer lemon and butter that’s been given a flavour upgrade by some espelette pepper.
Bar Crudo is a light, modern space and, though on the narrow side, a charming place to tuck into seafood while you’re in the NoPa area. But during your visit, don’t be shy about exploring the drinks list – a beer list that good (covering numerous continents) is made to be enjoyed.
