When the folks behind the fanatically popular Tartine bakery opened their addition to the reams of French restaurants in San Francisco, complete with antler chandelier, their fans came in droves. With its easy poise and flawless good taste, Bar Tartine makes a refreshing change to the surrounding Mission dive bars. The kitchen, headed up by chef Jason Fox, turns out some pretty stunning good seasonal country-French suppers. It’s quirky enough to be inviting and quiet enough in the early evening to promote conversation at the marbletop bar. The word is out, though, and seats are becoming less and less attainable, especially on Thursday through Saturday nights. If you can find a stool, this is a good place to eat or have a drink solo, with a reasonable chance of chatting up your neighbour.
