Swan Oyster Depot
An institution in terms of San Francisco restaurants since 1912, the Swan Oyster Depot is half fish market and half counter-service hole-in-the-wall. The best time to visit is between November and June, when the local Dungeness crab is in season. But at any time of year you’ll find the selections are straight-from-the-water fresh. Specialities include classic clam chowder, the smoked salmon plate, and an obscenely large variety of oysters. The staff are boisterous and friendly and everyone feels like a regular at the Swan Oyster Depot. For the full classic San Francisco effect, order a side of sourdough bread and a locally brewed Anchor Steam beer. Be prepared, it only takes cash.
