Hg2 : The Hedonist

National Museum

The largest art museum in Sweden has a remarkable collection housed in a building that’s reminiscent of Florentine and Venetian Renaissance architecture. There are works by Rembrandt, Manet, Goya, Rubens, Renoir, Degas, Gauguin, and the most notable 18th- and 19th-century Swedish artists (including John Tobias Sergel, Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn). There’s a wealth of Scandinavian paintings and sculptures, dating back to the 16th century, as well as applied arts and modern design including the Gustavsberg Porcelain Collection. Pieces from the royal collections are regularly displayed and the museum hosts international touring exhibitions. During the summer months, guided tours are available in English, but it’s more fun to work your way through the rooms on your own.
