Hg2 : The Hedonist

Football

Football is the biggest spectator sport in the country, with Sven-Göran Eriksson (known in Sweden by the nickname Svennis) and Freddie Ljungberg just two of the big names. Fans have been rewarded by Sweden’s constant appearance at European and World cups, though Stockholm’s three main teams, Hammarby, Djurgården and AIK, haven’t had much success in European club football in recent years. The city has several major stadiums, and there are many matches to choose from. As you might expect, Swedish domestic football takes a prolonged break through the winter months.

AIK, Råsunda Fotbollstadion, Solnavägen 51, Solna
www.aik.se

With a capacity of 37,000, Råsunda is one of the largest stadiums in the country. Home to AIK, it hosts occasional UEFA cup ties.

Hammarby, Söderstadion, Arenavägen
Tel: 08 725 1243  www.hammarbyfotboll.se

Far smaller, this stadium is on a par with some of the UK’s Third Division clubs, holding a mere 11,100. However, Hammarby competes in the A League, where they put up a good fight against the likes of Malmö and Göteborg.

Globen, Arenavägen, Johaneshov
Tel: 08 600 3400; Box Office: 077 131 00 00  www.globen.se

Globen is the enormous spherical venue that can be seen rising like the moon on the city’s southern skyline. It is the likely venue for many major sporting events as well as concerts.

For tickets to any of the games, contact the clubs direct, or use a local ticket agency: Biljett Direkt, Tel: 0771 70 70 70 www.biljett.se, one of the biggest ticket brokers in Stockholm.
