The Rum Diaries
If you like rum then of all the bars in Sydney, a pilgrimage to this laid-back Bondi drinking and tapas den is like Haj for the rum aficionado; there are more than 80 types of the good stuff on offer here from across the globe, and the bar’s Holy Grail is Havana Club Maximo at a cool $150 per serve. Serving a mostly effortlessly hip Bondi crowd, bowler-hatted barmen mix up Cuba Libres, Mai Tais and more Hemingway daiquiris than even its namesake boozehound could have quaffed. Even if rum doesn’t rock your boat, there’s something hugely appealing about this friendly bar probably due to the cheery staff, who do their best to make you feel at home. Interiors are casual, hip and ambient with lots of warm, recycled wood and curios like chandeliers and an old piano (which works – in case you want to have a bash). The food isn’t half bad, either – pitch up at one of the tables and select tapasy bites from paddock and sea, or from the well-priced ‘menus for two’ section.
