Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café 1812

In 1812, Solomon Berkelouw opened his first family bookshop in Rotterdam, Holland, and now, six generations later, 1812 is back – in the form of Café 1812. The intimate, warm and romantic space is just where you’d expect modern literary enthusiasts to debate and discuss the latest offerings from the bookshop below. And whether you want to sink into an antique chair and read a book with wine, beer, coffee or even some food – Café 1812 has got you covered. The wine list, by the way, a mix of New and Old World wines, is superb – and there are even some premium Dutch beers to remind us that all this began in Holland. The food is thoughtful and has just the right balance of comfort and elegance – cheese platters and High Tea at weekends we can highly recommend…

Ultimately, this den of dark furnishings and timber, antiques and polish is the perfect place to spend a good couple of hours with a good book, with good friends, or both.
