Café Hernandez
This Bohemian-style café is a tiny slip of a thing and one of the more off-the-radar cafés in Sydney, even to the locals, but it is well-known to die-hard regulars, night owls and especially the cabbies, who can stop in for a caffeine fix at 4am. Furnished with shabby Victorian sofas, gorgeous paintings by Joaquin’s late Barcelona-born wife Paquita Sabrafen and a polished antique coffee machine, there’s a warmth to the place that has made it a neighbourhood institution. Joaquin’s Spanish heritage translates to the menu, which features tortillas and chorizo rolls, and for a sweet fix, you can’t not try the delectable arroz con leche (rice pudding).
