Bistro Moncur is one of the most popular French restaurants in Sydney. It is perennially packed due to chef Damien Pignolet’s classic Parisian bistro cuisine and smart, elegant dining room. Set on a bustling street in a leafy, well-to-do area of Woollahra (Sydney’s version of Primrose Hill), the restaurant is pleasingly airy, with polished timber, crafty use of mirrored walls and eye-catching black-and-white mural artwork by Michael Fitzgames. The dining crowd is more old money than noveau riche, with a fair few purple-hued coiffed hairstyles about, but there’s not a hint of snobbery – Bistro Moncur is simply about classic French food paired with a beautiful wine list, with the added bonus of an attached pub, the Wollahra Hotel. Menu highlights abound, but particular stand-outs are the Provencale fish soup served with rouille and dainty croutons or the incredibly rich, fluffy onion soufflé, smothered with Gruyere cheese and paired with a 2008 Chateau Fuisse White Burgundy.
