Rosso Pomodoro
Set in the quiet area known as White Bay, you would not be surprised to see a tumbleweed scampering past around this neck of the woods, but pizza aficionados will travel – especially for the crusty, thin-based pizza at Rosso Pomodore. Tucked beneath some of the apartments, this is one of the more unassuming little places to eat in Sydney, and as it’s a hefty walk from the main pub ‘n’ eats area of Balmain, it’s best to drive or take a taxi. Its odd location doesn’t seem to bother the locals, though, who crowd in on any given night of the week for Italian-style pizza, cooked expertly with some strict rules like ‘No half and half’. The specials are chalked up on the board and there are a few large round tables ideal for a group of friends. Moreish creations abound, but the stand-out has to be the Rocco, laden with fresh tomato, mozzarella, rocket, prosciutto and shaved parmesan. There’s no corkage, either, so bring along that vino. Our only quibble is the toilet – it’s a hike away.
