Belvoir Street Theatre
Formed when 600 members of the theatre-loving community sprang into action in 1984 to prevent the former Nimrod Theatre from demolition, this is one of the theatres in Sydney which has really stood the test of time. Since it was reborn as The Belvoir, the stage has been graced by all notable Australian luminaries, including Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett and Susie Porter, along with a host of up-and-coming talents. Plays include a vast array of international and local productions, including Hamlet, Waiting for Godot, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The Downstairs Theatre has recently been taken back in hand and is where Belvoir runs a full season of smaller scale productions.
