Dr Mauruse Pub

Hidden underneath a large pink library next to the opera building, Dr Mauruse Pub is a favourite with locals – both as daytime café and after-work drinking spot. Since it is less than two or three minutes walk from the Old Town, you should try this place out.

With its low green desk lamps, brown walls and library full of paperbacks and board games, Dr Mauruse Pub almost defines cosiness, Estonian-style. A variety of chairs and tables, some of them antique, make this a comfortable place to grab a light lunch or dinner, a coffee or a glass of wine.

With a menu ranging from salads and soups to grills and kievs, Dr Mauruse is crowded with local lunchers and office workers, old and young. And, indeed, it’s a good place to whittle away a few hours – wireless internet access is free for those with laptops. Meal prices are excellent value, although be aware that waiting times can get long at lunchtime. The place is named after a famous Estonian writer and educator.
