Jewellery designer Jaan Pärn runs the Villa Hortensia as a non-profit-making guest house in the Master’s Courtyard, a ramshackle 13th-century courtyard only 50 metres from Town Hall Square. Famous past residents of the yard’s dwellings include burgermeisters and mayors, goldsmiths, barons and fellows of the Blackhead guild.
Today it stands in need of renovation and is being redeveloped as a home for artisan workshops – as well as a much-loved café, and now Villa Hortensia, a guest house with four rooms. These basic but comfortable lodgings are offered first to visiting craftsmen as well as elderly or handicapped visitors but are otherwise available to tourists. The rooms are simple and built on two levels, with a bathroom and kitchen downstairs and beds upstairs underneath attic windows.
