Maoz
The aptly named Maoz (Refuge in English) provides Tel Avivians with a sanctuary of informal hipness. Perched upon a street corner across from the Gan Meir Park, this laid-back bar drops pretension in favour of the funky – there are no unnecessary selectors at the door, the houselights remain up and the smoking is done outside. Indeed, the owners of Maoz want to be your friends. So much so that they designed the backroom as an apartment, complete with a shower and kitchen – so you’ll feel more like an invited house party guest. Their soundtrack sticks to funk and world music (think Manu Chao and Jurassic Five). The front room is dominated by a wide central bar, usually surrounded by attractive people conversing loudly in a plethora of different languages (the Maoz is a popular ex-pat scene as well). And visitors trump for the t-shirt and jeans ‘thrown together’ type styles. Whether finding a couch in the backroom ‘apartment ‘, or grabbing a seat at the bar, you’re sure to find your place in this welcoming environment.
