Hg2 : The Hedonist

In an age where the meteoric rise of a trend to mainstream rivals only its inevitable demise, the answer to a new bar-owners quest for the magic pill for success is at best fleeting. Industrial chic, Champagne-only menus, speakeasy atmosphere and smoke-free spaces are all recent entries into the stuffed portfolio of attempts to differentiate one bar from the rest. And when all else fails, there is always nuclear option: Go Vintage!

In Tonic, we have the White City’s first attempt at a proper neo-cabaret venue. Gold, felt and chandeliers are props meant to ease you into the gilded days of Weimar, Germany. The checkered floor-top harkens to the Bauhaus style that found its home in the streets surrounding the venue. Then, there is the piano and stage, beckoning a new Marlene Dietrich to seduce the fans to love and self-destruction. Of course, the full DJ set-up and video art installations do impinge on the thematic course chosen by the management, though it appears the venue’s clientele are unbothered by the inconsistency. Expect a crowd of insiders, mini-celebs and their fans in attendance most nights, as well as the common ‘special guest’ performance. At least for now, this is one of the places to see and be seen.
