Hg2 : The Hedonist

ShuShu

Given the sheer lack of legislation against alcohol throughout Israel’s young history, true speakeasies never found their way to Tel Aviv. Yet trends in this increasingly globalized world do make their way across the ocean; hence the birth of Tel Aviv’s neo-speakeasy dance bars. The Shushu, a Hebrew onomatopoeia for ‘keep quiet’, offers a playful twist on the theme, launched as a ‘private club’ hidden behind a frozen yogurt shop.

Before entering the dance-bar, be comforted with the fact that no matter what happens below, the excellent frozen yogurt will be there when you get back to the mundane real world. Located towards the northern edge of Tel Aviv, though not within the port area, expect a crowd that is more mainstream in taste, with an average age of thirty. The venue runs the gamut between sit-down, pick-up and dance bar, with nightly crowd playing the role of collective decision maker. The secret is out on the venue, so keeping it shushu is no longer a requisite.
