Going off-piste in Tignes varies from taking a short cut between two bashed pistes to putting skins on skis and roping up for a cross-country haul. Off-piste rookies will get some idea where to practice by riding the Tommeuses lift on the link between Tignes and Val d’Isère; the tracks in the snow either side are a pretty good guide. For the more experienced, there are plenty of challenging off-pistes to explore; Guerlain Chicherit, a four-time world free-ride champion, who has lived in Tignes since childhood, says it is ease of accessibility to the off-piste that draws skiers back again and again.
