Renowned chef Jason Bangerter has the stamina to run two great Toronto restaurants, both Canteen and the more formal Luma restaurant upstairs, simultaneously. Here, affordable fresh market food – like roasted half-chicken with root veg or steak frites – is presented with aplomb (the curry comes in a $500 Le Creuset tagine).
A glass wall onto King Street West is opened in the summer, providing a patio for al fresco dining. There’s a ‘grab-and-go’ section for coffee and baked goods, gourmet sandwiches and salads, and there are homemade snacks to take into the cinema (chocolate pop rocks and caramel popcorn). Dinner and a movie has never been so good.
